History

The Karkinos are a fascinating study of ‘what you shouldn’t do with your planet.’ As they evolved to be the dominant form of life on their planet, they did it by being more terrifying than everything else around them. And bigger. But mostly the terrifying. And through the power of science. Their science evolved faster because of their drive to survive. (As arthropods, they didn’t care much for other forms of life) A select few even tried to learn magic, but not enough to mainstream it in their society.

Soon though, they overtaxed their planet and were forced to turn their spaceships into life-sustaining vessels. They would’ve been pirates (in SPACE) but there weren’t many other vessels to plunder. So they just keep trying to colonize planets. They came to this one and invested in the creation of ‘Vanzin’ which they saw as the future of their race but then he was a jerk and nothing got done ever.

Culture

Karkinos culture is vast and varied (don’t even get me started on their romance) but not really. Most Karkinos are an orderly people, with a system where those of noble blood rule over those of not so noble blood. This is actually established by actual blood color, the nobles have darker blood while the commoners have lighter blood (this has no bearing on actual game traits)

They are very ancestral based and believe that their dead ancestors are watching over them and guiding them along. They keep their shells (after sacredly eating their dead family members) and decorate them. A family’s shell collection and how many are war heroes or great scientists and the like also improves their standing in society (and allows high standing commoners to marry into noble families).

Marriages are typically between one female crab thing and a male crab thing. They’re a matriarchal society, so a female crab with a host of male ‘husbands’ is not too uncommon. The reverse is rare, but not completely unheard of. Marriages between the two castes aren’t uncommon either, but usually the noble falls in love with a particularly beautiful crab.

Fashion

Karkinos typically paint on their shells. Children usually have no paint, and only when they choose their profession as teen crabs do they start. The paint or the carvings on their shell (carvings are usually reserved for those who have changed their culture or ship in a great way) denote their status and their accomplishments. The brighter, the better.
